Here you will find an overview of what you need to remember when travelling with, for example, a bicycle, skis, sports equipment, golf set, or other baggage that exceeds the normal checked baggage allowance. Prices for special baggage can be found here.
We only accept a limited number of special baggage on our flights.
Special baggage outside this limit will not be confirmed.
Ski Equipment
You can bring one or two pieces of ski equipment and they must not exceed 23kg in total. Skis are not included in the baggage allowance and must be paid for separately. One set of ski equipment can include the following:
- Ski bag with skis, ski poles or snowboard
- A pair of ski boots or snowboard boots and
- helmet
We offer special plastic bags intended to protect the skis from dirt and moisture. These can be purchased at the airport for NOK 50 (free for travellers with Widerøe Flex or Full Flex).
Bicycle
Bicycles can be brought on Widerøe flights but are not included in the baggage allowance and must be paid for separately. The bicycle must be packed in hard plastic or padded packaging intended for bicycle transport (e.g. bike case or bike bag). If you do not have special packaging for the bicycle, it will only be accepted on a standby basis – meaning it will be sent on a later flight with sufficient cargo capacity.
The following must be done to bring a bicycle:
- The pedals must be removed
- The handlebars must be turned towards the frame
- The chain and hub must be covered
- It may be wise to release the air from the tyres to reduce the risk of damage due to pressure differences when the plane is on the ground and in the air.
The maximum weight of a bike is 23kgs. If the bike weighs more than 23kg, an excess weight fee must be paid at the airport upon departure
Electric Bicycles and Segways
It is not possible to send electric bicycles and Segways with Widerøe due to restrictions related to the type of battery on such bicycles.
A golf bag includes golf clubs (14 clubs), golf balls (12 golf balls) and a pair of golf shoes.
Fishing Rods
All fishing rods must be transported as checked baggage in the cargo hold. The fishing rods must be well packed and it is recommended to use a hard plastic case (rod tube). Allowed fishing equipment includes one box of fishing hooks, fishing vest, and the number of fishing rods that fit in the case (rod tube). The price is the same as for one extra piece of baggage. See the price table further down the page. Soft and unpadded cases are not accepted as they do not withstand shocks or shaking.
Fish and Other Perishable Food Items
Fish and seafood normally contain salt, which in case of leakage can damage other baggage and cause serious corrosion damage to the aircraft:
- These shipments must therefore be packed in a combination packaging, for example with an inner and outer layer of absorbent material
Widerøe defines combination packaging as:
- Inner layer of polystyrene (Styrofoam), and
- Outer layer of plastic-coated sturdy cardboard or plastic box
- For example: AIRENA 6450/20kg or plastic-wrapped Styrofoam boxes 7839/20kg
The following packaging or equivalent is not permitted:
- Expanded polyester
- Plastic bags
- Garbage bags
- Diving bag
- Bag
- Handbag
- Packing box
- Cardboard box without plastic wrap
Widerøe is not financially responsible for loss or delay in connection with the shipment of fish and other perishable food items. Fish and other perishable food items must be packed as described above.
Pram
Infants (0-2 years) can bring one pram as checked baggage free of charge; for children over two years, the pram counts as one piece of baggage. Prams should be checked in together with other baggage but usually must be delivered at the special baggage belt. The pram must be foldable and other baggage should not be packed together with the pram. The pram must not weigh more than 23 kilos. You do not need to register the pram in your booking.
The pram must be packed in suitable packaging to protect it from damage. PramPack and Airshells or similar are considered suitable packaging. Plastic bags are not sufficient packaging as they only protect against dust. If the pram is not sufficiently packed, our liability is limited.
Car Seat
Infants (0-2 years) can bring one car seat as checked baggage free of charge. If you wish to take the car seat onboard the plane for a baby, you must book a child ticket for your infant. Read more about this under "Travelling with Children".
Car seats are unsuitable for transport in the aircraft cargo hold, even if packed. A small impact can make the car seat unsafe for use in traffic. Therefore, we do not recommend transporting car seats. If you still choose to send a car seat as checked baggage, our liability for the car seat will be limited.
Musical instruments that exceed the maximum hand baggage size (55cmx40cmx20cm) must be sent as checked baggage and be packed in hard material ("hard case") for transport.
Instruments that are larger than the standard size for checked baggage must pay excess weight fees, see price tables and allowed baggage for your ticket class above.
It is also possible to bring an instrument in the cabin provided that a seat is paid for and that the instrument does not exceed 75 kg with maximum dimensions 120x30x45 cm. The seat belt must be able to be fastened around the instrument and it must not extend above the seat back.
You can bring one "avalanche rescue bag" with a cylinder of compressed gas as hand baggage or checked baggage. The bag must be packed in such a way that it cannot be accidentally activated. The "airbags" in the backpacks must be equipped with overpressure valves. However, we will not accept these for transport as they are classified as "dangerous goods" under transport regulations.
When booking your ticket, please add a note in the special requests field that you are bringing an "avalanche rescue bag" as hand baggage or checked baggage.
Weapons cannot be part of your included baggage and must be paid for regardless. If you have a ticket that does not include checked baggage, you can send weapons as 2 pieces and pay for special baggage. Precautions when travelling with hunting and sports weapons:
- The weapon must always be presented voluntarily at check-in.
- The passenger must show a valid weapons licence and verbally confirm that the weapon is not loaded.
- Norwegian Home Guard personnel travelling with weapons must identify themselves as Home Guard military personnel with permission to carry the weapon.
- The bolt (for shotguns: fore-end)/firing mechanism and ammunition must be packed and sent separately from the rest of the weapon.
- Ammunition is considered dangerous goods and must be in the original packaging, or equivalent packaging where the cartridges are protected against friction, hard shocks or can come loose. Maximum 5 kilos per package and per person is accepted. Loose cartridges are not allowed. Ammunition must not be packed in the same piece of baggage as the weapon.
- Prices for special baggage can be found here.
Weapons to/from the UK
It is required to have a valid visitor permit to bring weapons to the United Kingdom. It is important to apply as early as possible as processing times are long. Without a valid visitor permit, fines will be issued and weapons confiscated.
Diving Equipment
Diving equipment counts as one piece of checked baggage on Widerøe.
Diving equipment is defined as:
- One diving cylinder (empty)
- One set of diving regulator/breathing valve/hose
- One harness for the diving cylinder
- One pressure gauge/manometer
- One diving mask
- Two swim fins
- One snorkel
- One knife
- One speargun/harpoon
- One jacket vest/safety vest
It is not necessary to register the diving equipment in advance provided that it is within the applicable size and weight limits for baggage.
