Travel to the United Kingdom
In 2025, the travel requirements to the United Kingdom were changed. They introduced Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for all travellers. This is a digital permission to travel. Leisure travellers with Norwegian passports generally only need an ETA.
Visas are only required for persons who intend to work, study, or stay in the country for more than 6 months. British authorities are also moving away from physical immigration documents to eVisa.
ETA – Electronic Travel Authorisation
From 2 April, all travellers with a Norwegian passport who do not require a visa must apply for an ETA before departure to the United Kingdom.
For other nationalities, check British authorities for what applies to you.
- Costs £16.
- Valid for stays in the United Kingdom up to 6 months.
- Applies to all ages, including children.
- Also valid for transit via the United Kingdom to other destinations.
- Valid for 2 years and unlimited entries.
- ETA is linked to your passport. If you get a new passport, you must apply for a new ETA.
- ETA only grants travel permission. It does not guarantee entry into the United Kingdom. You must still use a manual passport control or an ePassport gate for electronic approval.
eVisa
Do you need a British visa? Then you can apply for a visa via this page.
Do you already have a British visa? Everyone travelling after 2 April who uses a biometric residence permit (BRP) or card (BRC) to prove their immigration status must convert their physical visa to an eVisa. This must be done before you travel. You can do this via this page.
If you already have an eVisa, you must update it with the passport you intend to use for travel. You can do this on this page.
