Why am I asked about gender when booking a ticket?
The three main reasons are:
Safety and balance:
Airlines use standardised average weights for passengers to calculate the aircraft’s total weight and centre of gravity. Weight can vary somewhat between men and women, which is critical for the aircraft to take off and land safely.
Identity control (Secure Flight):
The information must match what is in your passport. Authorities and security organisations (such as TSA in the USA or national security authorities in Europe) require this to check passenger lists against official registers and prevent false matches on persons on watch lists.
Historical data systems:
Many airlines still use older booking systems (Global Distribution Systems) that require you to provide gender and title (such as Mr/Mrs) for the ticket to be registered in the system.
